Understanding Thermal Camera Specifications

Before comparing models, understand what matters: resolution (higher is better but exponentially more expensive), thermal sensitivity (measured in mK — lower is better), and frame rate (30Hz minimum for useful video). Radiometric capability (measuring exact temperature values) adds cost but is essential for inspection work.

FLIR Vue TZ20-R (~$3,500)

FLIR is the established leader in thermal imaging and the Vue TZ20-R is their drone flagship. Dual thermal sensors (wide and narrow FOV), 640×512 resolution, radiometric recording, and FLIR’s thermal processing software ecosystem. DJI’s professional thermal solution is the Zenmuse H20N integrated into the Matrice 350 RTK platform. The H20N combines a 640×512 thermal sensor with a 20MP starlight sensor for low-light operations. The RTK positioning built into the Matrice enables precise thermal mapping for utility inspection and agriculture. This is the solution for enterprise operators who need the full package: flight platform, thermal sensor, and mapping software in one ecosystem.

Autel EVO Max 4N (~$2,500)

Autel’s thermal option incorporates a 640×512 thermal sensor alongside a visible light camera. The EVO Max 4N is IP55 rated and includes Autel’s A-Mesh networking for multi-drone operations. The thermal camera quality is comparable to older FLIR models and significantly cheaper than the DJI Matrice solution. Best for operators who want thermal capability without the full enterprise platform cost.

Entry-Level Thermal: DJI Mavic 3 Thermal (~$3,500)

DJI’s Mavic 3E thermal variant brings thermal imaging to a portable platform. The 640×512 sensor is smaller than dedicated thermal platforms but remarkably capable for the price. The Mavic 3E is replacing the old Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced as DJI’s compact thermal option. Good for building inspections, solar panel scanning, and search and rescue where portability matters.
